Overseas Immersion Programme
The annual Overseas Immersion Programme (OIP) was started in 2006. It is an important component of RI's Leadership Development Programme. The OIP provides students with the opportunities to:
- hone life skills such as dealing with a new environment, working with others, developing real solutions to authentic problems and engaging in risk assessments while developing a service- oriented heart;
- network with other Student Leaders, both in school and overseas; and
- develop cultural awareness and global-mindedness so as to become World-Ready Singaporeans.
The OIP consists of two main components. The first part sees the Year 3 students participate in a two-week school attachment in our neighbouring Asian cities (such as Hue, Hanoi, Changchun, Wuhan, Shenzhen, Taichung, Surabaya, Chiangrai, Seoul, Delhi, Hyderabad and Kuala Kangsar) during the September and November school holidays. Each stint involves activities such as homestay, lesson observations, learning journeys, and combined community service projects with students of the school. This gives the students the opportunity to develop a greater understanding and first-hand experience of different cultures and lifestyles.
The second part involves the Rafflesians in hosting the students from the oversea schools in the following year when they are in Year 4. By playing hosts, Rafflesians are also provided the leadership opportunities to plan and implement programmes as they continue to build on the ties and friendships that have been established.
For many past participants, the OIP has been a life-changing experience. It has inspired many of them to take on active roles in leadership and community involvement.
