Year One Milestones

1. Orientation Programme

Various activities are planned to help new Year One students make the transition into secondary school life. These include teambuilding activities, the Raffles Trail (which introduces students to the various CCAs in RI), Peer Support Group Meetings (PSGM), the overnight Orientation Camp and the Year 1 Campfire, culminating in the Junior Rafflesian Investiture Ceremony (JRIC) where our Year One students receive their school badge and officially become part of the Raffles family. These activities are facilitated by teachers and the specially selected Year 4 Peer Support Leaders who serve as “big brothers” to their juniors. Parents are invited to attend the Raffles Trail and the JRIC.

2. National Education Talk for Year 1s

This is a talk by an Old Boy of the school on an issue related to national concerns. For example, in 2009, Mr. Eugene Tan, Associate Professor, Singapore Management University and a volunteer in various community organizations, spoke to the Year 1s about the importance of youths contributing to the internal defence of Singapore by being active participants in the community.

3. Learning Journey Day

On this day, all students in the school participate in learning journeys to take their learning outside the classroom. In 2008, Year 1 students visited the National Museum of Singapore, the Asian Civilizations Museum and the Hua Song Museum.

4. RI Lecture Series

This is an annual lecture where a Minister delivers an address on national issues to all students followed by a question-and-answer session. Previous speakers have included Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo and Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.

Year Two Milestones

1. Orientation Programme

Various teambuilding activities are organized for the students to make the transition into their Year 2 year.

2. Malaysian Montage

This is the highlight of the year for the Year 2s : the entire Year 2 cohort travels together to Malaysia for a week and engages in various learning activities such as visits to industries, cultural centres etc. Some of these, for example, the community service programme, are customized for the school and thus offers a unique experience for our students beyond a standard tour package.

3. National Education Talk for Year 2s

This is a talk by an Old Boy of the school on an issue related to national concerns. For example, in 2009, Lt Col Ong Tze Chin, MINDEF spoke to the Year 2s about national security issues.

4. Learning Journey Day

On this day, all students in the school participate in learning journeys to take their learning outside the classroom. In 2008, Year 2 students visited the Sungei Buloh Wetland, the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the NeWater Plant, Singapore Power Ltd and the Sembawang Town Council.

5. RI Lecture Series

This is an annual lecture where a Minister delivers an address on national issues to all students followed by a question-and-answer session. Previous speakers have included Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo and Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.

Year Three Milestones

1. Orientation Programme – Outward Bound Singapore

All the Year 3 boys participate in a week-long outdoor experience at OBS as their orientation programme at the start of the year. It is a way to build class spirit (as the boys are now mixed in Year 3 after two years of having the same classmates in Lower Secondary) and also offers the boys the platform to develop greater confidence, daring and spirit of adventure.

2. Overseas Immersion Programme

This is a two-week programme in Semester 2 for Year 3 students to involve themselves in cultural immersion in one of our neighbouring countries (e.g. China, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, etc.). The programme helps our students to develop greater global awareness through school attachment, home stay and working with their counterparts on a community service project based in the host city.

3. Raffles Leadership Programme

The RLP is a new initiative to help build a community of student leaders across CCAs and also for each leader to grow and develop himself through a series of leadership development enrichment activities. The RLP includes a residential stay at Raffles Boarding to inculcate independence, responsibility and community-consciousness.

4. Differentiated Modules Programme

Two and a half weeks are set aside in Semester 2 for Year 3 and 4 students to sign up for a series of enrichment modules to broaden their range of learning. The various 6 and 12-hour modules provide students the opportunity to develop new interests or deepen their expertise in their area of interest / passion.

5. RI Ambassador Series

This is an annual lecture where an ambassador delivers an address on a global issue to all Year 3 and 4 students followed by a question-and-answer session. Previous speakers have included His Excellency Mr Alok Prasad (India), Ambassador Patricia L.Herbold (United States of America) and His Excellency Paul Madden (United Kingdom).

6. Learning Journey Day

On this day, all students in the school participate in learning journeys to take their learning outside the classroom. All our Year 3 boys embark on the Battlefield Study Tour on this day.

Year Four Milestones

1. Orientation Programme

Selected Year 4 students serve as Peer Support Leaders to facilitate the orientation programme for the Year 1s but special activities are also organised for the non-PSLs to provide them further opportunities to develop their leadership potential.

2. Differentiated Modules Programme

Two and a half weeks are set aside in Semester 2 for Year 3 and 4 students to sign up for a series of enrichment modules to broaden their range of learning. The various 6 and 12-hour modules provide students the opportunity to develop new interests or deepen their expertise in their area of interest / passion.

3. Graduation Ceremony and Dinner

A graduation ceremony is held for our Year 4 students to mark the end of the boys’ time in the secondary section of the Raffles Programme. A dinner is also held for our boys to celebrate the happy memories of their time in the school together with their teachers.

4. RI Ambassador Series

This is an annual lecture where an ambassador delivers an address on a global issue to all Year 3 and 4 students followed by a question-and-answer session. 7. Cohort Community Involvement Programme (CIP)

This annual project for all the Year 4 students is in partnership with Dreams@Kolam Ayer. The Sec 4 students launch the project each year by interviewing the residents in the one-room flats at Kolam Ayer to better understand their situation. Following that, the boys will engage in a series of Home Creation refurbishing activities (e.g. painting, cleaning) to address the needs surfaced by the residents and celebrate the end of the project by organizing a block party.
