The MozART Challenge
A very successful national competition The MozART Challenge was organized and run by 5 MEP students from Sec 3. These 5 students organized the competition with the support of the Aesthetics Department, as part of their RE project. Through this competition, it was hoped that participants would gain better knowledge of the arts, and that RI’s role in promoting the arts in the local education scene would be recognized. The Preliminary Rounds were conducted on 21 and 22 May, with a total of 16 teams from 12 schools participating. Sponsorships were successfully sought from Yamaha Music, Faber-Castell, Focus Ceramic and Central Singapore Community Development Council. The final round for The MozART Challenge was conducted on 20 July, to an audience of 600 students in the school Auditorium. Feedback from the competitors and audience was very positive.

Music CCAs
| RISE | The Raffles Institution String Ensemble was selected to perform in the New York Band and Orchestra Festival from 16 – 24 June 2007 organised by World Projects. While in New York, the String Ensemble performed in the world-famous Carnegie Hall, as well as the Singapore Mission to much acclaim. |
| RIMB | The Raffles Institution Military Band was invited by the Ministry of Education, Malaysia, to perform at the IX Malaysian Fully Residential School Wind Orchestra Finale 2007 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre in June last year. While in Malaysia, they also held public performances at Berjaya Times Square and KLCC in Kuala Lumpur. |
| RICO | The Raffles Institution Chinese Orchestra held a public concert at the Singapore Concert Hall on 14 December 2007 as a tribute to their late conductor Mr Yeo Puay Hian. The concert was a resounding success with the involvement of the Siong Leng Musical Association and live singers performing both classical and contemporary favourites. |
| RIGE | The Raffles Institution Guitar Ensemble conducted a very successful trip to Japan from 26 November to 3 December 2007. During the trip, the RIGE conducted a musical exchange with the Seifu High School. It also visited the International Niibori Guitar Music Academy where the students watched a professional guitar ensemble practice, and attended a formal masterclass. RIGE also visited the Museum of Musical Instruments and the Tokai Guitar factory in Hamamatsu. |
| Raffles Voices | As part of fundraising efforts for the Raffles Voices’ upcoming competition tour to Poland and Germany in June 2008, the Raffles Voices performed 9 Christmas caroling sessions at 5 different locations over the December holidays in 2007. |
Competitions
The Music and Art students won a number of awards in the last 12 months, including:
1) 1st prize at the National Digital Art and Science Competition 2008 organized by Chua Chu Kang IT Centre, River Valley High School and Mobile Immersive Theatre. Project Stereographic 3D Animation (2nd Defense Line of Human Immune System) was a 2.5-minute 3D animation video created to illustrate the human immune system using the software 3Ds Max.
2) Merit Award at Greenwave Environmental Competition 2007 - Secondary Level organized by Sembawang Shipyard Pte Ltd. The award was a result of a Research Education project titled Green Crotchets - Songs for the Environment, consisting of a compilation of original songs about the environment written by 4 MEP students.
