RI Community Day - CIP In A Different Way

For The Community, As A Community

RI Community Day was a resounding success as students, staff, alumni and parents worked together "As a Community, for the Community" on over 30 service projects around Singapore on 20 March 2008.
In addition, we also raised a recording-breaking $55,000 for the various Volunteer Welfare Organisations (VWOs) that we worked with on that day.

The feedback received from the VWOs was very positive and the event was especially meaningful as the students had planned the various projects themselves, as part of our school's 185th anniversary celebrations.

Much thanks to all who supported the RI Community Day!

RI Community Day: A Student's Reflection

By Dixon Yu, 4P

"RI Community Day -- CIP in a different way" is a familiar phrase for the current RI students. It was the catchphrase used in the morning assembly announcements on RI's inaugural Community Day which was one of the three main events planned to celebrate our school's 185th birthday. And what better way to do it, than to "give others presents on our very own birthday", as the Guest-of-honour, RADM (Ret) Kwek Siew Jin, had said in his RI Community Day speech on 20 March.

As a member of the RI Interact Club's Executive Committee, I myself played an active role in the planning of the RI Community Day. I must say that I greatly benefited from the experience. The various core CCAs got together to propose the CIP projects we were keen to embark on. We had minimal restrictions from the school, hence we enjoyed much flexibility. In this way, we were allowed to tap on our strengths and passion to contribute to the community the way we could and wanted to.
RI Community Day was definitely a success as everyone got an opportunity to spread joy and happiness to fellow Singaporeans. Through this very special event, I truly experienced what it meant to "give back to society" without expecting a reward like extra CIP hours or the social recognition.

Auspicium Melioris Aevi.
