PM Lee Hsien Loong talked about embedding green technologies in our lives in a bid to making our city more eco-friendly. This was one of the aims of the recent Blue Earth Greening 2008 Competition Finals held at Singapore Polytechnic (SP). The participating teams showcased innovative methods in which the technologies of today could be tailored to meet our energy consumption needs and thereby lessen the effects of human activities on the environment.

Teams were asked to create a video that introduced their solutions to renewable energy and upload them to YouTube, where viewers could vote for their favourite video. RI’s team of 4 garnered much support and eventually made it to the Finals.

The Finals comprised a short introduction by the team on the process of making their video and the ideas present that could be utilised to help shape an environmentally friendly living space. Following that, teams screened their videos for judging.

The RI team comprising students from 2Q , Abdul Muhaimin Bin Abdul Rahman, Muhammad Fadhli Bin Mohamad Ikbal, Tay Hui Chiang and Wasiq Al Mamun, did the school proud by bagging the Champion Award. The judges were impressed by the use of lallang over corn as a source of clean biofuels, thus not only alleviating the problem of environmental detriments, but also the global food crisis. The relevance and novelty of the concept, coupled with the striking animation and visual effects, proved to be a winning formula that won us the coveted Gold, beating 8 other schools across Singapore

This competition served as an eye-opener to the myriad of ways in which simple practices and implementations can help to avert the deteriorating of our ailing earth. By encouraging students to use media innovation to raise awareness for environmental issues, Blue Earth Greening has planted the seeds for a better tomorrow.
