STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

To understand, appreciate the inter-connectedness of human experiences in society and to learn about our role in society, so as to play our part as active citizens of the immediate as well as the wider community.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Humanities Department strives to develop and nurture each Rafflesian to be a humane individual who empathises and lives harmoniously with others, exercises impartiality, and effective and responsible decision making skills, and display dignity in word and deed.

CURRICULUM GOALS
- Develop a sound understanding of key concepts, value systems and beliefs that shape the development of society.
- Develop an understanding of the inter-connectedness of the different layers of society.
- Learn from the experiences of others in managing a multi-dimensional society, so as to understand better the effrts taken to build and sustain a politically viable, socially cohesive and economically vibrant Singapore.
- Develop an interest and a sense of curiosity regarding the many interdependent spheres in which we live.
- Develop social conscience and a sense of responsibility with respect to community-spiritedness, and become active citizens of a globally interdependent community.

CURRICULUM OBJECTIVES

By the end of the course students should be able to:
- Detect, understand and appreciate the enduring understandings of the various subjects.
- Develop an understanding of the history of Singapore and the wider world.
- Develop a good understanding of the roles of key individuals and groups in shaping the social, economic and political institutions of Singapore.
- Acquire divergent and higher order thinking skills.
- Develop and articulate coherent and organised arguments based on evidence and evaluation.
- Make effective oral presentations.

History

- Use their extensive and detailed factual knowledge and understanding of the history of Singapore and the wider world to analyse relationships between a wide range of events, people and changes, and between the features of different past societies and cultures.
- Analyse links between events and developments that took place in different countries and in different periods.
- Make explanations and analyse reasons for, and results of, events and changes, which are well substantiated and set in their wider historical context.
- Make balanced judgement based on their understanding of the historical context about the value of different interpretations of historical events and developments.
- Identify and locate a wide range of sources of information that are appropriate and relevant for a particular task.
- Use sources of information critically, carry out historical enquiries, develop, maintain and support an argument, and reach and sustain substantiated and balanced conclusions independently.
- Analyse and explain different historical interpretations, and are beginning to evaluate them.
- Select, organise and deploy a wide range of relevant information to produce consistently well-structured narratives, descriptions, explanations, evaluations and arguments, making appropriate use of dates and terms.
- Evaluate sources of information, which they use, critically, to reach and support conclusions.
