Description

Aims:
- Provide a comprehensive and exciting environment to develop well-rounded students in the arts, and develop in them aesthetic sensitivity and critical thinking through experiencing a variety of arts activities. (General Art / Music Programmes)
- Provide opportunities for academically able students with an aptitude for the aesthetics to take up the serious study of art / music. (AEP / MEP)
- Achieve high standards of performance in a group setting for arts-inclined students. (Arts CCAs)
- Provide arts exposure and experience for all students in a wide spectrum of the arts (Arts Exposure Programme)
- Encourage students to take the initiative to involve themselves in arts-related projects (Drama Feste, CIP)

Curriculum

Art Elective Programme

This programme aims to provide a comprehensive and exciting Art education to develop well-rounded students in the areas of visual arts. It aims to nurture their creativity, imagination and art criticism abilities. Through this, students will have the confidence, maturity and skills necessary to function as young artists. At the end of four years, students may consider to continue to take Art as a subject which will eventually lead to the GCE A-Level Art and Design Paper at Year 6, under the Raffles Programme.
Year 1
Study of Visual Arts I - Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Neo Impresssionism and Cubism
Studio Practice I - Basic Classical Animation, Basic Drawing and Painting Skills
Year 2
Study of Visual Arts II - Favism, Expressionism and Modern Sculpture
Studio Practice II - Oil/ Arcylic Painting
Coursework I - Gathering and Investiagtion of Information
Year 3
Study of Visual Arts III - Futurism, Dadaism and Surrealism, Self/ Relationship, Social/ Cultural
Studio Practice III - Graphic Design, 3D Animation
Coursework II - Exploration and Development of Concepts
Year 4
Study of Visual Arts IV - Space/ Structure, Ideas/ Imgaination
Coursework III - At Year 4, students will have a choice of medium they want to specialise in. They will develop a final artwork, with supporting studies in their chosen medium.

To provide opportunities for academically able students with an aptitude for music to take up the serious study of music.

Elements of Music - Intervals / Italian terms / signs & ornaments / devices / chords / cadences / modulation / textures / score-reading, Musical Forms (binary / ternary / minuet & trio / Sonata / rondo / theme & variations), Instruments of the Orchestra
Style & Characteristics (Western) - Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century
Performance I - Performance Practice class (addressing stage performance, technique etc.), Masterclasses
Year 2
Analysis I - Column Analysis
History and Perception I - Instrumental Genres - keyboard solo, chamber music, orchestral music
Composition I - Introduction to Music Arrangement and Notation Software (e.g. SONAR/Sibelius/Finale), Problem-based project on Melody-Writing
Performance II - Performance practice class, Masterclasses
Year 3
Analysis II - Set Work
History and Perception II - Vocal genres - song, opera, musical
Composition II - Piano accompaniment styles, Small ensemble accompaniment, 2-part writing

Composition III - (Minor) word setting for solo voice & piano accompaniment, (Major) same as minor + stylistic imitation

General Art Programme

The Raffles Institution General Art Programme (GAP) is compulsory for all Lower Secondary pupils. Each academic year consists of one semester of GAP which aims to equip all Rafflesians with basic visual communication skills and inspire them to be creative and cultured future leaders of Singapore.

General Music Programme

The General Music Programme seeks to develop in students aesthetic sensitivity and critical thinking through experiencing a variety of music activities.
