RI Military Band
Description
The Raffles Institution Military Band, being one of the oldest bands in Singapore, has its origins dating back to the 19th century. In early 1938, brass instruments were purchased and a Band was begun under Hitch who was the director of the police band. But it was not until 1963 that the principal then, Mr EW Jesudason, gave the Band a permanent and definite form by having Sgt. Fiddler of RAF Changi form a band before the 1964 founder's day.
Since then, RIMB has made its name, in both outdoor and indoor competitions. The period from 1970-1990 saw RIMB winning spectacularly in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Outdoor Display Competitions. From 1990 onwards, even though it ceased to participate in the Outdoor Competitions, it has been winning every single SYF Indoor Competition Gold award, even the Gold (With Honours) award that was recently introduced in 2005. RIMB also entertains with its Bi-Annual concerts and numerous other concerts.
The motto: "We should! We must! We can! We will!" encapsulates the approach of the Rafflesian bandsmen to every endeavour with the desire, the sense of duty, the belief in our ability and the determination. It is the rallying cry that motivates and spurs the Band to give the very best in every undertaking.
