National Cadet Corps
Description
The history of National Cadet Corps dates as far back as May 1901 when C M Philips, the acting principal of Raffles Institution formed a cadet corps unit which comprised existing and ex-Rafflesians.
Many ex-NCC cadets now hold influential positions within the Civil Service. One such example is the first President of the Republic of Singapore, the late Encik Yusof bin Ishak, who was a cadet in Raffles Institution. He rose quickly through the ranks and became a Company Sergeant Major and later became the first student cadet ever to be commissioned as Cadet Lieutenant.
The NCC's mission is to develop resourceful, responsible, resilient, loyal leaders and team players through fun and challenging military related activities. Tying in with the overall goals of the organisation of NCC as a whole, we at RI NCC have this motto: "Set the Bar, Raise the Bar". We strive to create cadets who possess mental and physical strength, true men in every aspect.
Throughout the first 4 years, cadets are taught basic military knowledge like map reading, weapons handling and individual field crafts like tactical movement, cover and concealment. In Year 5 and 6, cadets will have the option to be trained as Cadet Lieutenant. Many of the Cadet Lieutenants became SAF Officers when they served their National Service.
Some of the Annual Competitions RI NCC participates include Shooting, Challenge Quest, Virtual Battle Space 2, Street Soccer and Orienteering. In addition, cadets have the opportunity to sign up for International Cadet Exchange Programmes (ICEP) to visit other countries. Cadets will also have the chance to perform live firings using the SAR21 rifles.
During the school term, we conduct training on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 3:30pm to 6:00pm. Training typically may consists of a physical training session, a short footdrill session and recreational activities. These recreational activities include war games, soccer, basketball, floorball, but are not limited to such, as we constantly seek out the cadets' views on what activities they would like to engage in during training.
Occasionally, many interesting activities are organised for the cadets. Some of these activities include Bowling, Amazing Race, Inline Skating, Hiking, Dragon Boating and Kayaking.
RI NCC conducts 2 annually camps, one in June and the other in December. The objectives of the camps are to allow cadets to showcase their leadership capabilities, and to bring out the best in them. To spur the cadets on to perform their best, awards are handed out to those with good performance at the end of the camp.
