02 Raffles Scout Group
Description
The 02 Raffles Scout group was founded on the 8th of February 1922. Then called the Second Singapore Scout Troop, it was the first land troop to be formed. Raffles Institution spearheaded Scouting in schools by being the first school in Singapore to establish a Scout troop as the Headmaster then, DA Bishop, wanted to broaden the co-curricular programme. 02 became the oldest surviving scout troop after the First Singapore Scout Troop disbanded.
02 dominated scouting competitions from since its establishment. The most outstanding achievement came when a Senior Patrol Leader of the group earned the Old Rafflesian Character Award, a rare honour. Two 02 scouts won the Queen's Scholarship in the years 1956 and 1957. They were Dr. Mah Guan Kong and Professor Lim Pin respectively. After 86 years, 02 is still going strong, and has been awarded Frank Cooper Sands Gold for both our Scout and Venture unit for 4 consecutive years since 2004
Our strong and supportive alumni include our Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, Professor Tommy Koh, and Dr Tan Cheng Bok. In year 2007, more than 200 old boys gathered at our 85th anniversary gala dinner despite their busy schedules.
Our current membership stands at 84, including both scouts and ventures ranging between 13-18 years of age . Within the scout unit, boys are grouped into 6 patrols, namely Dolphin, Orca, Shark, Lion, Panther and Tiger. Ventures operate as a separate unit with the older scouts returning to train the scout unit as Training Team members.
